5 tips for choosing your Upstate New York wedding photographer
Compare complete galleries, photography styles, coverage and communication before choosing a wedding photographer for your Upstate New York celebration.

1. Start with the photographs you want to remember
Before comparing packages, talk about what you want your wedding photographs to hold: time with family, quiet portraits together, the energy of the reception, or a little of everything. Save a small set of examples and describe what you like about them. Is it the color, the light, the expressions, or how relaxed the people seem?
A photographer’s existing work is a better starting point than asking them to reproduce another person’s portfolio. Look for an approach you already enjoy, then ask how they balance direction and observation during a wedding.
Compare traditional, candid and fine art wedding photography styles.
2. Look beyond the highlight reel
Ask to see complete wedding galleries rather than judging only a handful of portraits. Follow the story from preparations through the ceremony and reception. Look at family groups, indoor spaces and photographs made after dark, as well as the outdoor portraits.
If your ceremony is indoors or your reception will be in a dim room, ask to see comparable lighting. For an autumn wedding in the Capital Region or Adirondacks, discuss how the portrait plan will work with the daylight available on your date.

3. Talk through the day together
Share your date, venue or town, approximate guest count and the moments that matter most. Ask who will photograph the wedding, how family portraits are organized and what information the photographer needs before the day. A conversation should help you understand how you will work together.
For a wedding with separate preparation, ceremony and reception locations, walk through the travel between them. Travel and transitions use coverage time too. Ask what happens if the schedule slips, and whether a first look or a different portrait time would make the day feel less rushed.
4. Compare the actual coverage and written terms
Put proposals side by side using the same questions: how many hours are included, who is photographing, what travel is covered, how photographs are delivered and when you can expect them. Ask about prints, albums and additional coverage if those matter to you.
Read the agreement before booking. Confirm the payment schedule, cancellation or rescheduling terms, backup arrangements and image-use permissions directly with the photographer. An engagement session may be useful for getting comfortable together, but ask whether it is offered and what it costs rather than assuming it is included.
5. Choose someone whose work and communication fit
Recommendations from friends, planners and venues can help you build a shortlist. Still, review the work yourself and talk about your own plans. Another couple’s priorities or venue may be quite different from yours.
